Application
Automotive and rail
Hard, repellent and thin enough for plastic
The situation
Interior and exterior trim, pillars, grilles, badges, wheels, window frames and rail components in PC/ABS, PA, painted metal or aluminium, where the surface has to resist keys, cleaning agents and ultraviolet light without an oven.
What fails today
- Hard coats on plastic craze when the film is thicker than the primer can carry.
- A film that cures too fast traps solvent and blisters in a warm interior.
- Water repellency that comes from an additive rather than the backbone washes off in the first cleaning cycle.
- Films that pass the lab panel fail in the field because the panel was not the moulded part.
Grades for this duty
SF-CB003
Methylhydro, no aminosilane: needs an oven, co-reacts with other resins
SF-RC001
Aminosilane-modified, 7–8H, wipes on and cures in air
SF-RC002
The hardest room-temperature grade: 8–9H, tack-free in minutes when warm
SF-RC004
Lowest viscosity in the range, 50–60 % solids, room-temperature cure
SF-RC007
The flexible one: 4–5H for plastics and wind blades
SF-RC150
Low viscosity, room-temperature cure, 110° contact angle
SF-SC002
Slow cure and a long open time, 7–8H at the end
SF-SC150
Longer open time, the same 107° surface
How to apply it
Clean and activate the substrate; on polyolefins a primer or a surface activation step is usually needed.
Thin film, 4–6 µm; a heavy coat cracks as it cures.
Cure at room temperature for parts that cannot be heated, or accelerate with warm air where the part allows.
Handle after tack-free, pack only after the full cure: the film is still reactive for days.
How to qualify it
- Scratch resistance by pencil hardness to ISO 15184 (GB/T 6739) on the same plastic the part is moulded from, with the film thickness recorded.
- Adhesion by cross-cut to ISO 2409 or ASTM D3359, before and after an ageing cycle.
- Contact angle to ASTM D7334 with a fixed drop volume and a fixed reading time.
- Ageing under xenon arc to ISO 16474-2 or ASTM G155: a result from a QUV lamp is not comparable.
- Abrasion and chemical resistance against the fluids the part actually meets.
