Architecture and glass

Anti-soiling glass that keeps its optics

The situation

External glazing, curtain wall panels, balustrades and interior glass where soiling, fingerprints and graffiti are the maintenance cost. The glass is usually installed, so the coating has to be either applied in the factory or cured without an oven.

What fails today

  • Anti-soiling films that work on a new pane fail once the glass is washed with an alkaline detergent.
  • Thick films on glass show interference colour and lose transmission.
  • A coating that needs a primer adds a second failure surface on a facade nobody can service.
  • Graffiti release that depends on a sacrificial layer wears through and has to be reapplied in place.

How to apply it

Glass and glazed ceramic can be coated directly; the film is thin and does not change the optics.

Clean to a water-break-free surface before coating; the material will not level on a contaminated pane.

Cure as the grade requires; on installed glass, a heat-cured grade only works if the panel can come out.

Mask edges and frames: the film is harder than the gasket around it.

How to qualify it

  • Contact angle and roll-off angle to ASTM D7334, before and after cleaning cycles.
  • Adhesion after water immersion and after an ageing cycle.
  • Haze and light transmission before and after coating: a film that changes the optics is the wrong film.
  • Cleaning cycles with the detergent the building actually uses.
